I drag brand stories into my bathroom. Because that is where I find out.
Not the powder room. The powder room is for guests. Pretty, controlled, a little perfumed. The brands that make it there get the curated me — the one who still has her act together.
The bathroom is something else. Night breath, skin flakes, the smell of myself before I've decided what to present today. No performance. No context. And in the middle of all that — a brand narrative, sitting on my shelf, watching. I am curious what it does when I am residue.
That reach for it — without thinking. That's where it starts.
The ones that didn't make it came with outworn dating offers.
A founder in a garage. A grandmother's recipe. A river in a country that sounds clean.
Nice. Nothing. Swiped left. Tuesday at the latest.
The ones who make it to my bathroom — and stay — have a story that lures me. It surfaces slowly — in the formula, in the silence around the packaging, in something slightly unresolved that I never bothered to investigate because my hand was already reaching. While I am at my worst. While I smell. While I haven't performed anything yet.
Its narrative made it through my Sleeping Beauty thornbush — no prince, no sword, no campaign. It just grew through. And I think of it while cleaning my face. That involuntary thought. That tiny pull.
If it can make it there — in that absurd intimacy, next to my toothbrush, witness to my undone self — it can make it to my sofa.
